When the South Australian weather heats up, a reliable car air conditioning system makes every drive more comfortable. If your A/C is taking too long to cool the cabin, blowing warm air or producing an unusual smell, it may be time for an inspection.

At Eastside Automotive, an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre in Somerton Park, we can inspect, diagnose and repair car air conditioning systems to help keep your vehicle comfortable throughout the year.

A car air conditioning system does more than blow cold air. It circulates refrigerant through a closed system to absorb heat from the cabin and release it outside. Components such as the compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve and cabin air filter all play a role in cooling performance.

Watch for these warning signs:

Warm or weak airflow: Low refrigerant, a blocked cabin filter, a faulty fan or a restriction in the system could be responsible.

Cooling that comes and goes: Compressor problems, pressure irregularities or electrical faults may interrupt operation.

Unusual smells: Musty odours can develop when moisture and contaminants accumulate around the evaporator or in the ventilation system.

Unusual noises: Rattling, grinding or squealing when the A/C is switched on may indicate a problem with the compressor or its drive belt.

Windows that remain foggy: A poorly performing A/C system may struggle to help remove moisture from the cabin air.

Ignoring these symptoms can place additional strain on some components and may allow a minor fault to develop into a more expensive repair.

An A/C regas involves recovering and recharging the refrigerant to the vehicle manufacturer's specified requirements. However, refrigerant does not normally get used up like engine oil. If the level is low, a leak or another fault may be present.

A proper inspection can assess system pressures, cooling performance, electrical operation and potential leaks before deciding whether a regas, component repair or further diagnosis is required. Simply adding refrigerant without identifying the cause may only provide temporary relief.

Does Your Car Need an A/C Regas or a Repair?

Adelaide's warm summers, coastal conditions and salty air can make a well-maintained vehicle A/C system particularly useful. Over time, corrosion, debris around the condenser and restricted cabin filters can affect performance.

To help prevent problems:

Have the system checked if cooling performance changes.

Replace the cabin air filter at the recommended interval, or sooner if it becomes dirty.

Keep the front of the condenser clear of leaves and debris where safely accessible.

Follow the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance recommendations and report unusual noises or smells promptly.

Did you know? The A/C system can also help demist your windscreen by removing moisture from the air, even when you're not using it primarily to cool the cabin.

Autogas Installations: LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas - a mixture of light hydrocarbons that are gases at normal temperatures and pressures, but liquify at moderate pressures or reduced temperatures. LPG used as automotive fuel is referred to as LPG Autogas. Venturi System works well on the vast majority of cars manufactured prior to 2004. Gas Vapour Injection uses the same technology to feed the engine with fuel (gas) as a fuel injected car would normally use, e.g. computer control and injectors. At Eastside Automotive, we perform Routine Autogas Servicing, Fault Finding, Unexpected Emergencies, 10 year tank testing, Specialist Dyno tuning and more by our experienced staff.

Since 1930 the Motor Radiators name has been synonymous with quality in the radiator industry. Originally set up to build and supply radiators to the Holden car factory, it later became affiliated with Natra Ltd who were original equipment suppliers to the big 3. In 2000, it joined the Natra's retail arm Natrad as a franchisee and after just a few years started being recognised among its peers as a standout leader on a state level. In 2007 Eastside Automotive were awarded the National Franchise Of The Year award, a first for South Australia! Meeting the criteria for this award is extremely demanding and after constant changes, streamlining and putting in a serious and professional effort we finally got the grand prize.
